SANTA ANITA QUICK FORM GUIDE Brad Free free formguide March 12 >>>my tips are above and may differ from these >>>>>>>>>>>> |
BEST BET: My Summer Dream (9th race) First Race Maltese Falcon 2. Phosphorescence 3. Storm the Night ~MALTESE FALCON^ is better than his first two U.S. starts indicate; he can upset this maiden turf mile. First time in this country, he got keen, pulled while unrelaxed, ran his final quarter-mile in a sharp :23.06 and finished fourth. His next start, he hopped and was away last, then ran his final three-eighths in a fast :35.94 and finished third. He subsequently was gelded, and with a clean takeoff can handle these modest maidens. ~PHOSPHORESCENCE^ stretches out for the first time on turf following a pair of sprints in which he set the pace and tired in the lane. With two local sprints under his belt, he should be ready to run long. His dam was a two-turn turf winner in New York. PHOSPHORESCENCE is quick enough to set the pace if he wants. ~STORM THE NIGHT^ has improved each subsequent start, his third last out in a maiden-62.5k fits well in this special-weight. His stablemate STONKS drops in for a tag, first-time gelding and first-time Lasix. Second Race Nobe 2. Jacqueline Cochran 3. Prestigious The even-paced style ~NOBE^ displayed finishing fifth her first two starts in sprints suggests two turns is what she wants. She was not quick enough to keep up with the sprint pace, but maintained position throughout and virtually split the filed. Her sire ran long, her dam ran long, NOBE runs as if she also will run long. ~JACQUELINE COCHRAN^ split the small field last time after pressing the pace. Just an average effort, perhaps a step in the right direction. She finished behind ~PRESTIGIOUS^, who was nearly three lengths clear of third in her first try around two turns. That was a runner-up finish in a five-horse field. She is improving. The truth is, if the top choice does not win on the stretch-out, anything goes. Third Race Angelcents 2. Ready Jet Go 3. Bowl of Cherries The speed of the speed, dropping from N2X to $25k claiming starter, and shortening from six and one-half furlongs to five, ~ANGELCENTS^ can be long gone. She faces a problematic pace rival directly outside, but ANGELCENTS has run well in previous pace duels, and can wire the field at this shorter distance. If she falters, ~READY JET GO^ could score a come-from-behind upset. The fast races ‘GO ran last summer and auutmn fit in this claiming starter level, the possibility of a pace collapse gives her an upset chance rallying from behind. ~BOWL OF CHERRIES^ meets easier after being overmatched in a pair of N1Xs on dirt. Her figures compare favorably, her off-the-pace style suits the pace scenario. BABY KRISTEN is the aforementioned speedster drawn directly outside ANGELCENTS. If they hook up, it would not be good for either. Fourth Race Sawasdee 2. Butkus 3. Sonic Brees ~SAWASDEE^ benefits by the shorter distance of this five and one-half furlong N3L claiming race after he got worn down at six furlongs; he finished second. Although he meets a troublesome pace rival in the outside post, but if he somehow avoids a head-and-head duel with that rival, SAWASDEE can win with an up-front trip. ~BUTKUS^ will rally late; his closing style may play well because the aforementioned pace rival for the top choice happens to be the stablemate of BUTKUS. ~SONIC BREES^ had a tough trip last out in the race the top choice exits, while STIR THE POT is the comeback speedster, stablemate of BUTKUS, who will keep the pace honest. Fifth Race Yeng Again 2. Highland Ghost 3. Standing O ~YENG AGAIN^ looks obvious, second start back from a short layoff, dropping from a minor stakes to N2X, and among one of the fastest in the field on numbers. He should get a great trip positioned second behind the speed; the best race of his six-start career was his only previous start on this downhill course. ~HIGHLAND GHOST^ appears to be the speed of the field. He drops from a third-place finish in a stakes at Golden Gate, he could be loose out front. He is the one to catch. ~STANDING O^ has not raced since last June, but hails from a top stable that typically sends comebackers out ready to fire. Sixth Race Spoiled Rotten 2. Silent Beauty 3. Big Bell Taking a shot in this $16k claiming N2L sprint with last-out maiden-claiming winner ~SPOILED ROTTEN^. She did not run particularly fast in her maiden win, but she might not need to run fast to win this low-level race. Last-out maiden-claiming winners are usually competitive at the low N2L claiming level. ~SILENT BEAUTY^ followed her maidenclaiming win two back with runner-up finish at this level in her first against. She enters with the field’s highest recent speed figure; her win was validated when the third-place finisher returned to win. Last-out runner-up ~BIG BELL^ will be running late. Seventh Race Australia Mia 2. Ballet Dancing 3. Duvet Day Although ~AUSTRALIA MIA^ lost her U.S. debut, third as the favorite in a $100k stakes, she actually ran well first start since July. Multiple group winner in Chile, racing a mile and one-half first start back, she pressed the pace, challenged in the stretch, then got swallowed. Her pace rivals finished last and next-to-last. Good comeback for ‘MIA, a 9-for-20 veteran mare who cuts back to a mile one-quarter. She can win this G3 with natural improvement second start back. ~BALLET DANCING^ tossed in a clunker in a N2X last out, no visible alibi. Maybe she was too close to the pace, or maybe she simply misfired. That allowance was designed as a prep for this G3; plans proceed despite her fourth-place finish. She lands a hot rider in Flavien Prat, as Frankie Dettori sticks with top choice AUSTRALIA MIA. Assuming that BALLET DANCING reproduces her highly rated N1X win two back, she could give the top choice a battle. ~DUVET DAY^ exploded late to upset the turf marathon the top choice exits. Although this 10-furlong trip might be shorter than she prefers, she enters in peak form and will be flying late. BUZZ OF NEW YORK wheels back one week after a facile N2X win. Sharp mare commands respect. Eighth Race Page 5 of 5 Good Vibes Only 2. Sunrise Journey 3. I Got No Munny Comebacker ~GOOD VIBES ONLY^ gets the nod in this $50k claiming sprint based on his 3-for-3 record over the Santa Anita track, high figures earned against allowance company, and a possibly versatile running style. He is speed, drawn inside two others with the same style, but he also has run well from a pressing position. First start since November, sharp works, proven fresh, the one to beat. ~SUNRISE JOURNEY^ is a 13-win veteran up in class after successive runner-up finishes vs. Cal-bred allowance/optional claiming sprinters. A front-runner, he is drawn outside his pace rivals and will press the issue in the clear. ~I GOT NO MUNNY^ seems to have lost his speed at age 6, but that is okay in this situation. The pace should be quick, ‘MUNNY will be outrun early and rally late. TOOK CHARGE might be the speed of the speed, drawn directly outside top choice GOOD VIBES ONLY. Ninth Race My Summer Dream 2. Chaos Theory 3. Barristan The Bold ~MY SUMMER DREAM^ might be a standout in this $25k claiming starter turf sprint, having won a $50k claiming turf sprint on this course in January. His pressing style should translate to a cozy trip positioned just off the speed. Five furlongs might be a half-furlong shorter than his best distance, but he won a dirt race at this trip two back. He can sit, wait and blast home. ~CHAOS THEORY^ seeks his third straight following back-to-back $25k claiming wins. The eight-win veteran is a pro at this five-furlong trip, effective either pressing the pace or rallying from behind. ~BARRISTAN THE BOLD^ will be rolling late. That is a wrap for this handicapper. Taking a one-week break, returning for the Friday, March 24 program. |
